Airbnb Integration FAQ – Airbnb Hosts

PLEASE NOTE: This integration sends out an email to the guest and bcc’s the primary host. In order for this integration to work properly, only the primary host can pair their Yale Account with their Airbnb account. If a co-host pairs their Airbnb and Yale accounts, the email will not be sent to either the primary host or the guest. In the event that emails are not being sent, please contact Customer Support.

FAQ

  • How does Airbnb work with my Smart Lock?

Smart Locks provide Airbnb hosts with an easy, automated solution for managing access to vacation rentals.

  • How do I set up automated access to my Airbnb property for guests using an Yale Smart Lock?

Follow these steps to give your Airbnb guests access to your rental property:

Step 1: Connect Your Yale App and Airbnb Accounts
    • In the Yale App select the ‘Works With’ tab
    • Select ‘Airbnb’
    • Select ‘Connect to Airbnb’ and enter your Airbnb account information
    • As a Host, you will see each of your Airbnb listings
Step 2: Pair Your Locks to Airbnb Listing(s)

Pair lock(s) with the associated listing for all of your Airbnb rentals. If you have multiple locks on one rental home, select only the locks that you want to make available to guests.

    Step 3: Select Access Type

There are two ways to facilitate access to your Airbnb rental for your guests: Yale App Access or Keypad Access.

  • What are the details about the two types of guest access?

    Access via the Yale App
    • Guests receive an email with instructions to download the Yale App, create an account, and connect it to their Airbnb account.
    • Guest are then able to view the upcoming reservation in the app.
    • Guests can use the app to unlock/lock the door during their rental period.
    • Guest access is automatically revoked when the reservation ends.
Access via the Keypad (if applicable)
    • The Yale App sends an email with a personal entry code to the guest once their reservation is confirmed.
    • The code is valid for the duration of the reservation.
    • If the reservation date/time is changed, the time period that the code is valid will change accordingly, but the entry code stays the same.
    • If the reservation is canceled, the code is deactivated.
    Notes About Keypad Use
    • If your lock has a connected keypad and you enable keypad access, the app auto-generates a random personal entry code for your guest.
    • When the keypad feature is enabled, guests are not required to install the app.
    • You can offer your guests keypad and app access by selecting both access options.
    • We recommend that hosts enable the One Touch Lock feature so that guests can easily lock the door when they leave.

Products required for auto-keypad codes include:

    • 2nd or 3rd Generation Smart Lock
    • Smart Keypad
    • Yale Connect or Doorbell Cam
  • Do I need a Yale Connect to participate?

For home access via keypad, an Yale Connect or Doorbell Cam is required to automatically set the personal entry codes on the lock.

For home access via app, an Yale Connect is not required. However, a Connect is recommended if you would like to remotely operate the Yale Smart Lock. If your guest does not have a compatible phone,  you have the option to remotely unlock the property for them. In this case, an Yale Connect needs to be paired with the Smart Lock.

  • What if my guest does not want to use the Smart Lock?

Confirmed guests receive an email requesting that they contact you to make alternate arrangements if they are not interested in using the Smart Lock.
  • How do I remove an Airbnb Guest from my lock if I no longer want them to have access to the property?

If you need to revoke access to your property from someone who has rented it through Airbnb, you need to end their reservation through Airbnb. If you end the reservation via the Airbnb app any time before the reservation is up, then Yale will follow the Airbnb integration and remove their access as well.

For example, if a Guest books your property from 3:00PM 1/1/20 to 11:00AM on 1/5/20 and you decide to delete their lock access through the Yale App on 1/4/20 then the Airbnb integration will override this request and regrant that Guest access up until 1/5/20 11:00AM.

  • Does the integration work with co-hosts?

No. At this time, the integration does not work with co-hosts.
  • What if the guest’s phone battery dies?

Your guest can use another phone to log into their account.
  • What if the guest’s phone is not compatible with the app?

The guest can call the host to remotely unlock the property (Connect required).
  • What if the guest doesn't have cellphone coverage or a data plan?

The host can share their Airbnb property's Wi-Fi credentials ahead of time, enabling the guest to connect their phone to the residence's Wi-Fi at the door.
  • What if only some of my guests are interested in using Smart Lock?

You can store a physical key inside your property and share its location with the guest. Guests can start using the physical key once they enter property using the Smart Lock.
  • How will potential guests know that my Airbnb property is equipped with a Smart Lock?

In the Amenities section of your Airbnb listing, you can add “This property supports keyless access powered by Home”.
  • I received the error “There was a problem loading your Airbnb information”.

The ratio between Airbnb and Yale accounts is 1:1. If you receive this error while setting up the integration between Yale and Airbnb, it indicates that the Airbnb account you’re trying to link to your account is already tied to an Yale Account. The Main Host for the Airbnb listing should also be the Owner of the Yale Lock. If you are having issues connecting with the lock, check with other Owners of the Yale lock to confirm if another user has already linked the Airbnb account you are attempting to link with their Yale account.
  • I did not receive the automated email

If there are multiple Hosts linked to the property, only the Main Host that linked the Airbnb with the Yale Account will be bcc’d on the confirmation email to the guest. If you are a Co-Host or Primary Host on the property, you will not receive automated emails sent to guests.
  • How do I disconnect my Airbnb account from my Yale account?

If you decided you no longer want to use the Airbnb and Yale integration, you can disconnect your accounts with the following steps:

    1. Open the Yale App
    2. Navigate to Works With from the side menu
    3. Scroll to Airbnb
    4. Select DISCONNECT
    5. You will receive a notification to confirm you wish to disconnect your accounts.

Automated Airbnb E-Mail Not Sent

UPDATE: Airbnb has reported that this issue has been fixed. If you are still experiencing this issue, please contact Customer Support and reference this information.

A change to Airbnb's API has impacted automated emails and they are no longer being sent out.

In the meantime, the following documents how each integration is impacted. Select your integration below for troubleshooting information:

  • Lock Only

Typically, an Automated Email is sent that provides instructions to the Guest on how to download the Yale Access App, create a Yale Access account, and link their Airbnb account with their newly created Yale account. This action is optional to the Airbnb Guest and not required.

Currently, the Automated Email is not being sent and the Airbnb Guest is not aware of how to complete the steps to access the property.

If you are an Airbnb Host and you receive a booking while we are working to resolve this issue, please copy and paste the following to relay to your Guest over Airbnb’s messaging system:

AirBnB has partnered with Yale to make access to your AirBnB rental experience easier. Your AirBnB rental is equipped with a Yale Smart Lock that lets you unlock the front door using your smartphone - you don't have to worry about losing your keys again!

    How it works:

If this is your first time using a Yale Smart Lock:

    1. Download and install the Yale Access App.
    2. Check your smartphone is compatible with Yale Access
    3. Guests from outside the United States: If you did not receive SMS verification code from Yale, please contact your local support centre
    4. Open the Yale Access and tap "I Received an AirBnB invite."
    5. Link your AirBnB account by tapping "Connect To AirBnB."

If you already have the Yale Access App on your smartphone:

    1. Go to "Menu" at the top left and tap "Works With."
    2. Tap on the "AirBnB" logo and then again on "Connect To AirBnB" to link your AirBnB account.
    3. Once your Yale Access and AirBnB accounts are linked, you can view your upcoming access in the Yale Access App on the "Keychain" screen.
    Want a physical key?

Virtual keys offer better security and easier access. However, If you are not interested in virtual keys or you do not have a compatible smartphone, please contact your AirBnB host to make alternative arrangements for access to the property.

Thank you and have a wonderful stay!

  • Keypad Only

Typically, an Automated Email provides an Entry Code to your Guest with instructions on how to use the Yale Smart Keypad.

Currently, the Automated Email is not being sent and your Airbnb Guest is not aware of their Entry Code nor how to use the Yale Smart Keypad.

If you are an Airbnb Host and you receive a booking while we are working to resolve this issue, please copy and paste the following to relay to your Guest over Airbnb’s messaging system:

    It’s best for you to:

    1. Open your Yale Access App.
    2. Navigate to the correct House.
    3. Tap the bottom right Guest List icon.
    4. Locate the upcoming Airbnb Guest by their name and tap on the User Account.
    5. Once you have verified you have the correct user by matching their First Name and their Access Schedule (Check In + Check Out), relay the Entry Code to the Guest via Airbnb’s messaging system.

Please note: If you do not see your Airbnb Guest’s Entry Code in your Guest List, please manually create an Entry Code for them and ensure your bridge is online.

To create an Entry Code, please select Invite or tap the + icon and do the following:

    1. Enter Airbnb Guest’s name (Ex: John Airbnb)
    2. Select Temporary for Access Level
    3. For Access Schedule, check in should be Start Time and check out should be End Time (ensure timezone is correct if you are located in different timezone)
